Box Score 2 MASON, Ohio – The Malone University baseball team pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the 12th inning here Friday afternoon to hand West Liberty a 4-3 loss in WLU's second game of the day at Legends Field.
Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (0-6) had dropped a 7-0 verdict to Quincy (Ill.) in a morning contest.
The extra-inning loss in the second contest spoiled a pair of fine pitching performances for West Liberty.
Starter
Gaetan Sinisgalli carried a 3-hit shutout into the sixth before the Pioneers (2-0) were able to break through and tie the game with a 3-run uprising.
Sam Aulick came on in the seventh and kept Malone at bay until the 12th when the Pioneers' leadoff man reached on an infield error, was sacrificed to second and sprinted home on a one-out single up the middle. It was only the second hit allowed in 5.1 innings of impressive relief work by Aulick, who had four strikeouts and two walks.
West Liberty had its best offensive showing of the spring, pounding out 15 hits off a trio of Malone pitchers, but left a dozen runners on base.
Colton Coss and
Chad Harper each had 3-hit games with a double and two singles while
Coby Eckstein doubled, singled and drove in a run.
Jason Schutte had two singles and an RBI while
Jared Houser also had a pair of hits.
In the first game, the Hawks (4-1) exploded for five runs over the final three innings to put the game out of reach as two Quincy hurlers scattered six singles in blanking the Hilltoppers.
Tyler Blomquist turned in a strong start for WLU, holding the Illinois squad to two runs on four hits while striking out five over the first five innings but West Liberty never got anything going at the plate.
Eckstein and
Bailey McGrath and each had a pair of hits for the Black and Gold.
The Hilltoppers head to Glenville State on March 1 for a 12:45 p.m. non-conference game against Lock Haven (Pa.).
