BRIDGEPORT, Ohio – The Mountain East Conference announced Tuesday that West Liberty University had swept the MEC's Men's and Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week Awards after impressive showings at Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic.
Hannah Kemp was honored as the MEC Female Runner of the Week with
Danah Phillips earning MEC Male Runner of the Week honors.
Kemp, a true freshman from Bethesda, Ohio who hails from Union Local High School, cracked the Top 25 out of more than 530 runners in Louisville on Saturday.
The first-year standout placed 24th with a PR of 18:53.7 for the 5,000-meter Blue Division race - barely a minute off the winning time of 17:43.6. That led Coach
Justin Simpson's youthful Hilltoppers to a 19th-place finish in the massive 62-team field.
Phillips, a sophomore from Clarksburg, W.Va. and Robert C. Byrd High School, posted a personal best of 25:45.6 to place 52nd out of more than 500 runners in the 8,000-meter Blue Division race on Saturday.
One of three WLU sophomores to crack the Top 70, Phillips helped lead the regionally-ranked Hilltoppers to a 21st-place finish out of nearly 60 teams.
The West Liberty men and women hit the trails again on Saturday when they travel to Pittsburgh to compete in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
