URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University volleyball team snapped Urbana's 10-match winning streak here Friday night with a 3-2 win in Mountain East Conference action at the Grimes Center.
The win kept Coach
Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (13-3, 4-0) unbeaten in the MEC while spoiling the league debut for the host Blue Knights (11-5, 0-1).
The teams split 25-22 decisions in the first two sets before West Liberty opened up a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 victory in the third set.
The Hilltoppers nearly wrapped things up in four sets, serving for the match twice only to see Urbana hang tough to extend the match with a 27-25 nod.
West Liberty took control midway through the fifth set and pulled away down the stretch for a 15-10 win, closing out a marathon affair that lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours.
Four Hilltoppers posted double-figure kills.
Stephanie Leonard had a team-high 12 kills while
Olivia Baumhoer and
Raimey Benson added 11 each.
Madison Clayton chipped in with 10 kills and 4 blocks while freshman
Abbi Gillson stuffed the stat sheet with 9 kills, 5 blocks and a pair of service aces.
Kendall Souder and
Amanda Leonard each posted double-doubles. Souder finished with 24 assists and 10 digs while Leonard weighed in with 13 digs and a dozen assists.
Kailee Cunningham led all players with 30 digs.
The WLU women step out of conference play on Saturday for a triangular with Ohio Christian and Bob Jones University at the OCU gym in Circleville, Ohio.
