WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty assistant coach
Angel Estrada is working with the Hilltoppers' safeties and special teams again and the former West Virginia University standout says his groups are ahead of the game nearing the midway point of preseason camp.
Estrada can certainly lead by example. Now in his ninth season on the hilltop, the New York City native was an All-Big East safety at West Virginia University who went on to star for several years in the Arena Football League before turning his attention to coaching.
More than 15 years after taking off his collegiate helmet for the final time, Estrada keeps the competitive juices flowing by playing flag football at the national level.
The former Mountaineer pauses before Monday's practice to talk to Todd Ullom, the voice of the Hilltoppers, about the progress he's seen from WLU's veteran corps of returning safeties. He also talked about the importance of special teams and how it takes a special type of player to excel in that role.
