Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team locked up a second-place finish in the Mountain East Conference North Division and clinched an MEC Tournament berth here Sunday by splitting a season-ending doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit.
Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (20-26, 17-15) rolled to an 8-2 win in the second game after dropping a 6-0 decision to the host Cardinals (8-34, 7-25) in the opener at the JB Chambers Complex.
Dalton Davis homered twice and drove in four runs for the Black and Gold after Bub Haddox had put the visitors ahead to stay with a 2-run bomb in the second game.
Chad Harper and Chad Matthus each had a pair of singles while Coby Eckstein added an RBI single and Ethan Estes doubled.
Mitch Viakley pitched into the sixth inning to get the win with relief help from Cody Shook, Trevor Stewart and Luke Nees.
The Hilltoppers never got anything going against WJU's Josh Bell in the opener. The Cardinal hurler scattered three singles and didn't walk a batter in twirling a complete-game shutout. Jesuit scored three first-inning runs and never looked back.
Sunday's win gave West Liberty six consecutive 20-win seasons, equaling the longest streak in school history set by the Hilltopper teams of 1985-90.
The MEC Tournament gets under way in Beckley on Wednesday morning. Pairings and game times will be announced later this week.
