    WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Notre Dame (Ohio) Sunday afternoon at a sunny but cold Kovalick Field diamond.
    The visiting Falcons (9-20, 7-9) squeezed past Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (10-15, 8-8) by a 4-3 count in the opener before mounting a late surge in the second game to finish off the sweep with a 9-1 win.
    West Liberty's bats were as cold as the weather on Sunday as the Black and Gold was held to just five hits in each of the two games.
    In the first game, WLU bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead after three innings but Notre Dame pushed two runs across in the top of the fourth and held on for the win.
    The Hilltoppers had the tying run in scoring position with none out in the top of the seventh after Chad Matthus singled and moved up to second on a passed ball but Notre Dame's Josh Armbruster retired the next three hitters in order to finish off the complete-game win.
    Dalton Davis had a two-run single in the bottom of the second and Justice Jackson singled and drove in a run. Bub Haddox tripled and scored in the bottom of the third.
    Freshman Tyler Blomquist impressed with three innings of no-hit shutout relief in a losing cause.
    In the second game, WLU's Mitchell Viakley carried a one-hit shutout into the fifth only to see Notre Dame plate a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead.
    The Falcons took advantage of two more Hilltopper errors to break the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring seven two-out runs to put the game on ice.
    West Liberty hits the road next weekend for Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders at Urbana.
