WASHINGTON, Pa. – West Liberty University southpaw ace Parker Dyson fired a two-hit shutout here Saturday to give the Black and Gold a split with Notre Dame (Ohio) in a doubleheader at Wild Things Park.
The Mountain East Conference twinbill was moved to the western Pennsylvania diamond due to wet field conditions at WLU's Kovalick Field following Saturday morning's snowfall.
Dyson's gem enabled Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (10-13, 8-6) to notch a 4-0 victory in the nightcap after seeing the Falcons (7-21, 5-9) rally for a 5-2 win in the first game.
Notre Dame never got a runner past second base against Dyson in the finale. The hard-throwing lefty surrendered a hit in each of the first two innings before slamming the door.
Dyson held the visitors hitless over the final five frames, striking out seven while issuing three walks. The junior standout lowered his ERA to 2.19 with 44 strikeouts and just 23 hits allowed in 37 innings this spring.
The Hilltopper hitters were held to just four hits but made the most of them. Bub Haddox and Tyler Ramsay each ripped out RBI doubles while Coby Eckstein chased home a pair of runs with a single and a sacrifice fly.
In the opener, Notre Dame scored four runs with two out in the top of the seventh to erase a 2-1 WLU lead in a frustrating setback for the Black and Gold.
Justin Retzer came up one out short of his fifth win of the season, striking out 10 while yielding seven hits and three walks in 6.2 innings. Ethan Estes and Justice Jackson had run-scoring singles for the Hilltoppers.
Weather permitting, West Liberty will wrap up the weekend series against the Falcons with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader back at Kovalick Field.
