ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Liberty University acrobatics and tumbling team closed out its inaugural season on a high note here Thursday night with a convincing 230.560-143.725 victory in a dual match at Davis & Elkins.
Coach
Treasure Fields' Lady Hilltoppers (2-4) led the host Senators (0-4) by less than a point after a tightly-contested first half but pulled away following intermission to post the blowout win.
Highlighted by a 9.25 score in the toss heat, West Liberty won the Compulsory event by a 28.20-25.25 margin to take an early lead but Davis & Elkins battled back.
The host Senators won two of the three heats in the Acro event to claim a 25.00-24.05 nod and followed that up by sweeping all three heats in the Pyramid event for a 28.25-27.00 win decision as the first half drew to a close.
The Pyramid event featured some of the top performances of the night by each team as the Hilltoppers posted a 9.15 (9.50 start value) in the inversion heat and a 9.20 (9.90 start value) in the open heat only to see D&E prevail with three heat scores of 9.15 or better.
That comeback effort by the hosts narrowed West Liberty's halftime lead to 79.25-78.50 but the Senators could come no closer.
West Liberty eked out a 25.05-24.80 win in the Toss event, pushing its lead to 104.30-103.30 before giving itself some breathing room with a solid 42.70-40.425 victory in the Tumbling event - winning four of the six heats - for a 147.00-143.725 advantage heading into the Team event.
The Hilltoppers put the meet on ice with a score of 83.56 in the Team event. Davis & Elkins was unable to post a score in the event due to an insufficient number of competitors.
