Stagani Stretches Streak to Help WLU Earn Split

Baseball | 4/9/2017 8:19:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AVON, Ohio – Senior ace Greg Stagani extended his scoreless inning streak to 20 straight frames here Sunday to help West Liberty split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Notre Dame at Sprenger Stadium.
It was the second split in as many days for Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (18-9, 13-3), who breezed to a 9-1 win in the first game before dropping a 6-2 verdict to the Falcons (9-22, 5-11) in the second contest.
In the opener, Stagani blanked the hosts on three hits through the first five innings before departing with a 9-0 lead to get the win.
Bub Haddox drove in two runs with a double and a pair of singles while Alex Rojas added two doubles and three RBIs. Ethan Estes and Coby Eckstein had run-scoring singles and Nolan Marcus chipped in with a double for the Black and Gold.
After pounding out 10 hits in the first game, West Liberty couldn't get anything going against Notre Dame's Jeff Stover in the finale.
Stover went the distance in the scheduled 9-inning contest, limiting the Hilltoppers to just five hits while striking out six and giving up only one walk. Mike Adams doubled and scored to pace the WLU attack.
The Black and Gold return home to host Atlantic Region rival California (Pa.) in a 1 p.m.doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Kovalick Field.
