Madonna Renames Court in Honor of Bernabei-McNamee.
Now head women's basketball coach at NCAA Division I University of Albany (N.Y.), Bernabei-McNamee was named the 1992 West Virginia Class A Player of the Year after leading the Blue Dons to that state title before going on to a record-setting career on the hilltop.
The Hilltopper All-American set NCAA Division II records for career assists (1,107) and single-game assists (24) that still stand more than two decades later. She was the only woman in the history of the West Virginia Conference to surpass 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career and the only four-time first-team All-WVIAC honoree.
After graduation, she embarked on a highly-successful coaching career. She was an assistant coach with the University of Maryland's 2006 national championship team and also had assistant coaching stints at Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia University.
She served one year as head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan and had an impressive three-year run at Pikeville (Ky.) that included a pair of NAIA national tournament bids and a trip to the 2016 NAIA Final Four.
Bernabei-McNamee took the reins at Albany last year and led the Great Danes to an NCAA Division I Tournament bid with their sixth consecutive America East Conference championship. She resides in Albany with her husband, Joe McNamee, and their children, Luke and Caden.
