Two Tough Losses for WLU Baseball

Baseball | 5/2/2016 5:45:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team's post-season hopes took a hit here Monday afternoon when Fairmont State swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with back-to-back walk-off wins.
The host Falcons (20-26, 10-18) rallied in their final at-bat for a 3-2 win in the first game and were down to their last out before frustrating the Hilltoppers (24-21, 12-16) again with a 6-5 heartbreaker in the finale.
In the opener, Fairmont State strung together three straight one-out singles to snap a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh.
West Liberty had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Jordon Meyer's RBI single and a run-scoring double off the bat of Mike Adams in the top of the first but Falcon hurlers Zac Burch and Tyler Holt slammed the door the rest of the way.
The Black and Gold were held to one hit – a third-inning single by Adams – and no runs over the final six frames.
The Hilltoppers saw a thrilling comeback go for naught in the second game after erasing a 4-0 Fairmont lead with some late-inning lightning.
West Liberty loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth before a hit-by-pitch, sacrifice fly and throwing error put three runs on the board, cutting the Falcons' lead to 4-3.
The Hilltoppers were down to their final out in the top of the ninth when D.J. Busby ripped a game-tying single through the right side of the infield. Back-to-back wild pitches sent Busby to third and he jogged home with the go-ahead run on another RBI single by Meyer.
Fairmont put runners on second and third with two out in the bottom of the frame when Austin Norman delivered a two-run walk-off single, chasing home the tying and winning runs to complete the sweep.
Busby and Adams each had two singles and an RBI for West Liberty while Bub Haddox also had a pair of hits. Connor Coup singled and drove in a run.
Monday's losses dropped WLU two games behind Wheeling Jesuit for the third and final MEC Tournament berth in the MEC North Division. The Hilltoppers and Cardinals close out the regular season with a four-game series this weekend with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at West Liberty on Saturday and a 1 p.m. twinbill at WJU's I-470 Complex on Sunday.
