WLU Baseball Rallies Past Ashland

Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team came from behind Wednesday afternoon to hand Ashland University a 7-3 loss in a scheduled 9-inning non-conference game at Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (18-9) used a five-run uprising in the sixth inning to erase a 3-1 lead by the visiting Eagles (14-11).
West Liberty had just three singles during the decisive frame but a walk, a wild pitch, two hit-by-pitches, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly helped the opportunistic hosts take control.
That turned out to be more than enough support for Justin Retzer, who came out of the WLU bullpen in the fourth to earn the win with six scoreless innings of three-hit relief.
Connor Coup had two singles and an RBI for the Black and Gold while Mike Adams also had a pair of base knocks. Bailey McGrath singled and drove in a run.
Weather permitting, the Hilltoppers return to Mountain East Conference action this weekend when they host Notre Dame (Ohio) in 1 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
