Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team came up short in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at sunny but cold Kovalick Field on Tuesday.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (17-9, 7-5) were outslugged, 10-8, in the first game with the Yellow Jackets (14-8, 9-3) claiming a 6-3 verdict in the second contest.
In the opener, WLU jumped out to an early 4-1 lead but couldn't hang on as State batted around to score six runs in the top of the third and added three more in the sixth. The Hilltoppers responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
Ethan Estes drove in two runs with a double and a single while Tim Hughes added a double, single and RBI and Nolan Marcus also doubled and singled. Mike Adams weighed in with a double in a losing cause.
The second game, a scheduled 9-inning affair, was tied at 3-3 after seven frames but State plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and added an insurance tally in the ninth to finish off the sweep.
Marcus and Jordon Meyer each pounded out a double and single for WLU while Adams had two singles and drove in a run. D.J. Busby also had a pair of hits while Bub Haddox singled and drove in a run.
The Hilltoppers will try to get back on track Wednesday afternoon when they host Ashland (Ohio) in a scheduled 9-inning contest. The non-conference test is set for a 3 p.m. start.
