Box Score PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team outslugged Alderson-Broaddus, 13-11, Wednesday afternoon in a scheduled 9-inning non-conference game at sun-splashed Jack Funk Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (22-14) sprinted out to an 11-4 lead after just three innings and fought off several Alderson-Broaddus (23-12) comeback attempts to claim the victory.
The hosts had won 15 of their last 17 games over the past month and came storming out of the gates on Wednesday with a four-run uprising in the bottom of the first inning.
West Liberty batted around in the top of the second to take a 6-4 lead and then opened up an 11-4 lead with five more tallies in the top of the third. The Battlers closed the gap with four runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Hilltoppers were able to hang on for the win.
The Hilltoppers pounded out a dozen hits off eight A-B hurlers. Justice Jackson had a double, two singles and an RBI while Connor Coup had a double and a single. Clay Francis drove in three runs with a pair of singles, Mike Adams had two singles and an RBI, Jordon Meyer launched a two-run homer and Bub Haddox tripled and chased home a pair of runs.
Parker Dyson got the win with 3.2 innings of one-hit relief while Tory Fuscardo hung up goose eggs in the eighth and ninth to earn the save.
West Liberty returns home for a key weekend series with Shepherd, the MEC North Division leaders, at Kovalick Field. The Hilltoppers and Rams will play back-to-back 1 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
