West Liberty, Urbana Swap Shutout Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University baseball team earned a split of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Urbana on Saturday afternoon.
The host Blue Knights (12-22, 6-12) claimed a 3-0 win in the first game but Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (21-12, 10-8) salvaged the split with a 7-0 shutout victory in the finale.
In the opener, Mark Smyth took the hard-luck loss on the hill despite striking out 10 batters and allowing only two earned runs. Urbana ace Austin Mace silenced the West Liberty bats, holding the visitors to just three harmless singles while striking out seven and issuing just two walks.
The Black and Gold wasted no time getting the bats cranking in the second game, plating two runs in the top of the first before putting the game out of reach with five runs in the last three innings.
Greg Stagani hurled eight shutout innings to improve to 6-1 on the season, striking out seven with just two bases on balls.
Tim Hughes paced an 11-hit attack with two singles and a two-run home run, Mike Adams had a single and a two-run double and Jordon Meyer launched a two-run circuit blast. Bub Haddox had a single and an RBI.
The two teams square off here in another doubleheader on Sunday, scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
