Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The West Liberty University baseball exploded for four runs in the bottom of the ninth Friday afternoon to hand Ohio Valley University a 7-6 loss in a scheduled 9-inning single game at Consol Energy Park.
Bub Haddox had the big hit for Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (4-1), cranking out a bases-loaded triple to forge a 6-6 tie with one out in the ninth. The Fighting Scots (3-8) walked the next two batters to load the bases and Ethan Estes singled to bring Haddox trotting home with the game-winning run. Mark Smyth came on in the top of the eighth to get the win in relief as seven WLU hurlers combined for 10 strikeouts and seven walks while giving up eight hits - all singles. D.J. Busby had three hits for the Black and Gold while Haddox finished with a single, triple and three RBIs. Mike Adams also had an RBI triple for the winners.
The Hilltoppers open Mountain East Conference play on March 11 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Glenville State.
