Hilltopper Baseball Holds Off Ashland Rally

Box Score ASHLAND, Ohio – The West Liberty University baseball team jumped out to a big early lead here Wednesdayafternoon and held on for a 9-8 win against Ashland University at Donges Field.
The non-conference victory by Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (15-7) snapped a five-game winning streak for the host Eagles (13-9).
The West Liberty bats came out smoking with three runs in the top of the first and four more in the second to grab a quick 7-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers carried a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth before Ashland began cihipping away.
After the hosts closed the gap to 9-7 heading into the eighth inning of the scheduled nine-inning contest, Sean Pare came out of the WLU bullpen to earn the save.
Pare retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth but yielded a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. Pare shook off the long ball and finished off the Eagles with a flourish, striking out the last two batters to end the game.
Bub Haddox led a 13-hit attack for West Liberty with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Jordan Meyer added a double and a single while Ethan Estes chased home three runs with two singles. Tim Hughes weighed in with two singles and two RBIs.
The Hilltoppers head to the University of Charleston on Friday for a 1 p.m. Mountain East Conference doubleheader against the Golden Eagles.
