WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team dropped both ends of a marathon doubleheader to Glenville State Saturday afternoon at Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (14-7, 5-3) were 2-0 shutout victims in the opener and the Pioneers (7-17, 6-2) went 13 innings to pull out a 10-9 nod in the second game.
In the opener, Glenville prevailed in a pitcher's duel behind a 5-hit shutout from Wesley Stauffer. The GSC hurler struck out six Hilltoppers while issuing only one walk. Jordon Meyer had two of West Liberty's five singles.
Yale Hughes took the hard-luck loss on the hill. Hughes held the Pioneers to just five hits but Glenville was able to scratch out single tallies in the fourth and sixth frames to get the win.
West Liberty took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning of the second game only to see the Pioneers combine three hits with an error and a walk to plate four runs and take an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the frame.
The Hilltoppers weren't ready to go home yet. Ethan Estes walked to lead off the ninth and Meyer doubled him home. West Liberty eventually loaded the bases with two out and Nolan Marcus ripped a two-run single up the middle to send the game into extra innings.
Glenville scored an unearned run in the top of the 11th but Bub Haddox kept the hosts alive by leading off the bottom of the frame with a home run. West Liberty had the tying run in scoring position in the 11th and 12th but couldn't come up with the game-winning hit.
After the Pioneers manufactured a run in the top of the 13th to take a 10-9 lead, WLU's Connor Coup ripped a one-out double into the left-centerfield gap but a strikeout and fly ball to the outfield ended the game.
Meyer led the Hilltoppers' 14-hit attack with two singles and a double while Mike Adams drove in two runs with a home run and a single. Jared Carranza also had a pair of hits while D.J. Busby doubled in a losing cause.
The West Liberty baseball team will try to bounce back on the road Wednesday with a 1 p.m. non-conference game at Ashland (Ohio).
