Box Score PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team got a strong mound outing from Nolan Marcus here Tuesday afternoon and held on for a 3-2 non-conference win against Ohio Valley in a scheduled 9-inning game at Stump Field. Marcus struck out nine and gave up only four hits in a route-going performance for Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (12-5). Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Fighting Scots (4-16) cut the lead in half with a double and a single but Marcus escaped with no further damage and retired the side in order over the final two innings to preserve the win.
West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Bub Haddox fouled off five two-strike pitches before working a walk. Haddox sprinted to third when Michael Adams singled up the middle and scored the game's first run on a double-play grounder. The Hilltoppers gave Marcus all the breathing room he needed with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Haddox and Adams produced the first run and Adams came around to score on an RBI single by Ethan Estes. West Liberty hits the road on Friday with a 1 p.m. twinbill at West Virginia Wesleyan.
