Box Score 1 WISE, Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from UVA-Wise here Saturday afternoon to complete a successful southern swing.
After splitting an MEC season-opening twinbill at Concord on Friday, Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (11-5, 3-1) handed the Highland Cavaliers (9-9, 0-4) a 6-3 setback in Saturday's lid-lifter before coming from behind for a 9-6 win in the finale. West Liberty never trailed in the first game as the Black and Gold pounded out 13 hits and Yale Hughes went the distance on the mound for the complete-game win. Hughes gave up only five hits while striking out six and issuing three walks. Ethan Estes had a big game with two singles and a solo home run while Bub Haddox also had a three-hit game. Michael Adams singled and belted a two-run homer in the top of the third, Jordon Meyer added a pair of singles and Nolan Marcus had a single and an RBI. In the second game – a scheduled 9-inning affair – the Hilltoppers scored six unanswered runs in the final three innings to storm back from a 6-3 deficit and complete the sweep.
D.J. Busby had two singles and drove in a run while Marcus also had a pair of hits. Estes slammed another solo homer and Tim Hughes launched a two-run circuit blast while Meyer and Jackson weighed in with RBI base knocks. Tory Fuscardo closed out the game with three innings of shutout relief to earn the win. West Liberty steps out of conference on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game against Ohio Valley at Stump Field in Parkersburg.
