Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – Tim Hughes ripped a 3-run home run and four West Liberty pitchers combined on a 2-hitter to lead the WLU baseball team to a 6-2 win against St. Augustine's in the second game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. The win salvaged a split for Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers in the Sunday twinbill and also capped a strong opening weekend for Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (3-1), who took three of four games from the Falcons (1-8). West Liberty grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Jarred Carranza sacrifice fly in the top of the second before Hughes broke the game open with a 3-run blast over the centerfield wall in the top of the third.
That was more than enough run support for starting pitcher Sean Pare, who gave up just two singles while pitching into the sixth inning for the win. Jordan Meyer highlighted a two-run sixth inning with an RBI double before Hilltopper relievers Connor Clark, Nick Naumann and Justin Retzer finished up on the hill. The Falcons had hung on for a 3-2 win in the opener.
Tim Hughes' RBI double in the top of the second gave West Liberty an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons scratched out an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to knot the score at 1-1 a and tacked on two more scores in the fourth to go up 3-1. The Hilltoppers got a run back on Jordan Meyer's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth and Hughes led off the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line to put the tying run in scoring position but WLU couldn't come up with the equalizer. West Liberty is scheduled to return to action on March 3 when they take on Ohio Valley University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Washington, Pa.
