Multiple All-MEC Honors for Hilltopper Volleyball

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – A total of five West Liberty University volleyball players earned All-Mountain East Conference laurels on Wednesday when the MEC coaches announced their 2016 All-MEC Volleyball Team.
Junior middle blocker Sydney Scherer was a first-team selection with Amanda Leonard honored as a second-team choice. Raimey Benson and Stephanie Leonard were honorable mention All-MEC picks while Kailee Cunningham earned a spot on the MEC's All-Freshman Team for Coach Kayla Mull's fast-rising Hilltopper squad.
Scherer, who hails from Brookville, Ohio, led the MEC and ranked No. 2 nationally with a total of 163 blocks during the regular season. The talented junior also led the team and ranked among the MEC's top 10 in hitting percentage while ranking third on the Hilltopper squad with 217 kills.
Amanda Leonard, a sophomore right-side hitter from Milford, Mich., led the MEC and ranked No. 3 nationally with five triple-doubles despite missing several early-season matches due to injury. She ranked among the team leaders in numerous categories, including kills (189), assists (393) and digs (203).
Twin sister Stephanie Leonard, a sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter, ranked second on the team and sixth in the MEC with 119 blocks. She also ranked No. 2 on the WLU team with 227 kills while chipping in with 173 digs.
Benson, a sophomore outside hitter/right-side hitter from Dublin, Ohio, led the Hilltoppers with 307 kills to go along with 136 digs and 25 service aces while Cunningham, a freshman libero from Independence, Ohio, led the MEC and ranks No. 9 nationally with 644 digs in her first collegiate season.
West Liberty opens MEC Tournament action on Thursday when the Hilltoppers take on Urbana in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal at WJU's McDonough Center.
