INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to West Virginia State Friday afternoon on the WVSU campus.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (4-2, 2-1) threw a scare into the three-time defending Mountain East Conference champions when
Rhiannon James and
Laura Huwe pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles but the Yellowjackets (3-0, 3-0) picked up
wins at the other two doubles spots and swept the six singles matches to close out the match.
Alaina Pauley just missed getting a win for WLU at No. 6 singles. Pauley rolled to a 6-1 win in her first set against Lindsay Goff only to see Goff square the match with a 7-5 decision in the second set. That sent the match into a tiebreaker with Pauley coming out on the short end of a 10-6 count.
The West Liberty women will try to get back on track Monday afternoon when they host Fairmont State in a 4 p.m. match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
