Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit baseball teams closed out the Mountain East Conference regular season on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader for the second straight day at the I-470 Complex.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (28-19, 22-14) rebounded with a 10-7 win in the second game after the Cardinals (15-25, 14-21) had rallied to a 7-6 win in eight innings in the opener. West Liberty had already clinched its second straight MEC playoff berth heading into the final weekend and will be heading to the MEC Tournament later this week. Wheeling Jesuit's season concluded with Sunday's twinbill.
In the opener, the Hilltoppers took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to see WJU rally for the extra-inning win.
In the second game, West Liberty spotted Jesuit a 4-2 lead but exploded for eight runs in the final four innings to win going away.
The long ball played a role in the WLU victory as Tim Hughes clubbed a 2-run homer and Tim Mirandy closed out the scoring with a solo blast in the top of the seventh. Brunner led the assault with two singles and a double to drive in a run while Pierro picked up a pair of RBIs with two singles and D.J. Busby chipped in with a pair of base knocks.
