WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Salem International Thursday afternoon at Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (26-17) handed the Tigers (9-40) an 8-1 setback in the first game before coming from behind for a 6-5 eight-inning win in the finale.
In the opener, West Liberty scored four runs in the bottom of the first and kept right on rolling.
Anthony Pierro went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and an RBI. Bub Haddox also went 3-for-3, chasing home a pair of runs with three singles. Taylor Snare had two singles and an RBI while Jordan Meyer doubled and drove in a run.
Dustin Henry pitched into the sixth inning, giving up only one run to get the win. Tory Fuscardo finished off the sixth and Nolan Marcus hurled a scoreless seventh to close out the game.
In the second game, Salem batted around in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead but the Hilltoppers tied it with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and the game went into extra innings after a scoreless seventh frame.
Bruce Knisley retired the Tigers in order in the top of the eighth and West Liberty wasted little time pushing the game-winner across.
D.J. Busby led off the Hilltopper eighth with a base-on-balls and promptly put himself in scoring position by stealing second. The speedy Busby then came all the way around to score when Taylor Snare dropped down a bunt single.
Haddox had another big game, driving in two runs with a home run and a single, while Justice Jackson had a triple and single and picked up an RBI. Trey Smith also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
West Liberty closes out the regular season on the road this weekend with back-to-back 1 p.m. doubleheaders at Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit.
