Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University baseball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Notre Dame (Ohio) Wednesday afternoon at Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (19-12, 15-9) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Falcons (17-10, 17-7) in the opener but rebounded with a 6-3 win in the finale. In the opener, Notre Dame - currently second in the MEC standings - took advantage of five West Liberty errors to plate a pair of unearned runs and those tallies proved to be the difference in a one-run game.
Anthony Pierro had two singles, Tim Mirandy doubled home a run and D.J. Busby had single and an RBI to lead the hosts at the plate. In the second game, the Hilltoppers scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back in salvaging the split.
Freshman Marcus Nolan went the distance on the mound for the win, striking out three and walking five while allowing eight hits. Tim Hughes swung the big stick at the plate, raking an RBI double in the bottom of the first before putting the game out of reach with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Jared Carranza had a pair of singles and Jordan Meyer added an RBI double while Pierro and Mirandy each had a single and an RBI. Busby doubled and scored a run. West Liberty will host league-leading Shepherd Saturday and Sunday in a pair of 1 p.m. doubleheaders at Kovalick Field.
