Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team pounded out 24 hits and scored 20 runs in sweeping a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from UVA-Wise Sunday afternoon at Stallard Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (18-11, 14-8) pulled away to an 8-1 win in the first game and held off a late surge by the Cavaliers (8-23, 7-15) in the nightcap to finish off the sweep with a 12-8 nod. In the opener, Bub Haddox broke up a scoreless tie with a 2-out, 2-run single in the top of the sixth and West Liberty put the game on ice with a 6-run uprising in the top of the seventh.
Sean Pare carried a 2-hit shutout into the seventh to earn the win, striking out 3 and walking 3 while scattering 3 singles. Haddox led WLU's 10-hit barrage with 2 singles and 3 RBIs. Tim Hughes had an RBI double, Yale Hughes and Anthony Pierro added run-scoring singles and Tim Mirandy had a double. The Hilltoppers took a 12-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh but UVA-Wise didn't go quietly.
The Cavaliers scored three runs and had runners on first and second with two out when Tyler Fuscardo came on in relief. Fuscardo gave up a single to load the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate, but got Ty Lighton on an infield popup to end the game and earn the save.
Jordan Meyer had three singles as West Liberty raked six UVA-Wise hurlers for 14 hits. Jarred Carranza drove in a pair of runs with a double and a single while Haddox also weighed in with a double and single. The Hilltoppers return home to host Notre Dame (Ohio) in back-to-back 1 p.m. doubleheaders on Tuesday andWednesday at Kovalick Field.
