BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team took three of four games from Fairmont State this weekend. The Hilltoppers split a twinbill with the Falcons here Sunday afternoon, dropping the opener by a 5-3 score before bouncing back with a 5-1 win in the finale at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
Fairmont (4-16, 4-14) overcame a 3-2 deficit midway through the first game to salvage its lone win of the weekend series. Yale Hughes and Jordan Meyer each had RBI singles for West Liberty (16-8, 12-6) while D.J. Busby added a double. In the second game, Yale Hughes went the distance on the hill for the win, striking out 7 and walking 4 while giving up just 5 hits. Anthony Pierro snapped a 1-1 tie with a 2-run double in the top of the fifth. Pierro trotted home on a Meyer double and Bub Haddox doubled Meyer home to cap what proved to be a game-winning 4-run uprising. Haddox had 2 doubles and 2 RBIs to lead the Hilltopper attack. Busby had a pair of singles and drove in a run while Tim Hughes and Jared Carranza also doubled. The Hilltoppers return to action on Tuesday when they host Seton Hill in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kovalick Field.
