Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The surging West Liberty University baseball team stretched its winning streak to seven games on Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 3-2 and 8-1 at Kovalick Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (12-4, 6-2), who have won 9 of their last 10 games, were keyed by a pair of strong mound performances is taking both games from the Bobcats (2-5, 1-5). In the opener, the Hilltoppers did all their damage at the plate in the bottom of the second inning. Anthony Pierro laced an RBI double, Jarrod Carranza singled in a run and D.J. Busby plated a run with an infield grounder. Pierro had a multi-hit game with a single to go along with his run-scoring double. Mark Smyth earned the win with a dominant complete-game outing. Despite surrendering unearned runs in the first and seventh frames, Smyth held the Bobcats to just four hits over seven innings while striking out four and walking three. West Liberty rolled out the heavy artillery in the second game, pounding out 11 hits with more than half of them going for extra bases.
That was more than enough to secure the win for Greg Stagani, who struck out five and walked two while giving up just five hits. Jordan Meyer homered and doubled to drive in a pair of runs while T. Hughes also had a home run and a single to pick up an RBI. Pierro had two singles and drove in a run while Bub Haddox added a double and an RBI. Carranza and Jon-Michael Brunner also doubled for the Black and Gold. The Hilltoppers and Bobcats return to the diamond on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
