Box Score 3 MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The West Liberty University baseball team split a high-scoring doubleheader at Chowan (N.C.) on Sunday, rebounding for a 17-5 win in the finale after dropping a 14-7 decision in the opener.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (3-1) nearly battled back from a sizable early deficit in the first game but Chowan (3-5) took advantage of four WLU errors to plate six unearned runs and hold the visitors at bay. Tim Hughes drove in two runs for West Liberty with a home run and a double while Anthony Pierro also chased home a couple of tallies with a home run and a single. D.J. Busby added a double, single and RBI while Darin Heatherington added a double. Yale Hughes worked five strong innings on the mound to get the win in the second game, striking out 9 while allowing just 2 walks. The Hilltopper bats gave him plenty of early breathing room as they exploded for 11 runs in the top of the second and never looked back. Jordan Meyer went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and a single to drive in four runs. Mike Adams also picked up four RBIs with a double and a single while Busby had another multi-hit game with a double, single and RBI. West Liberty will be idle until Feb. 25 when they travel to California, Pa. for a 3 p.m. game.
