WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University wrestling team couldn't build any momentum Saturday night as No. 4 Mercyhurst rolled to a 40-4 win at the ASRC.
The powerhouse Lakers (1-1), who feature seven nationally-ranked wrestlers on their roster, notched a trio of first-period falls and added a pair of technical falls in an impressive performance against Coach Mitch Smith's youthful Hilltoppers (2-7). Despite the lopsided setback, DeMadre Turner was able to provide a bright spot for the hosts. The junior 165-pounder dominated Mercyhurst sophomore Ehrin Lee from start to finish and came up just short of a technical fall, settling for a 14-2 major decision.
The West Liberty wrestlers will close out their pre-Christmas slate Dec. 19-20 when they compete in the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
