JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown flexed its nationally-ranked muscles Friday night with an impressive 39-6 dual meet victory against Atlantic Region rival West Liberty.
With four returning All-Americans and six national qualifiers in the lineup, the Mountain Cats (1-0) – coached by WLU Hall of Famer Pat Pecora – notched three first-period falls to go along with a pair of technical falls and two major decisions in winning eight of the 10 matches on the night.
Despite the lop-sided final margin, Coach Mitch Smith's visiting Hilltoppers (1-4) didn't go down without a fight. Johnathan Spence dominated his match at 133 pounds and came away with a 7-1 decision to put the visitors on the board early. Senior vet David Schlieper provided West Liberty's other points with a solid 4-2 win at 157 pounds. The Hilltoppers will be idle over the weekend but return to the mats on Thursday when they host Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit in a 7 p.m. dual at the ASRC.
