Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Sarah Evans scored with less than a minute to go in the second overtime period here Saturday to lift the West Liberty University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Charleston at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
After trading first half goals, neither team scored in the second half or the first 10-minute overtime period but Coach
Barry Christmas' homestanding Hilltoppers (2-3-2, 2-2-1) controlled the run of play throughout the final extra frame and were rewarded just before the final horn.
West Liberty forced a corner kick with just over 2 minutes remaining and continued to build on the attack. Shots by
Keiana Palmer and
Allie Roberts twisted wide but WLU surged back into the Golden Eagle end as the clock ticked into the final minute.
Veronica Rothka set up the game-winner with a pass to Evans, who sent home the go-ahead goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the final overtime period.
Emily Butler had opened the scoring for the Hilltoppers with an unassisted goal in the 11th minute but Charleston (4-3-1, 3-2-0) equalized in the 39th minute with Lyndsey Thompson's unassisted goal.
Allie Warsaw had 5 saves to earn the win in net for West Liberty while Zoe Zyta was charted with 7 saves in a losing cause for the Golden Eagles.
The Lady Hilltoppers travel to Shepherdstown on Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. match with Shepherd.
