WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty posted its second shutout of the season on Sunday, blanking Shawnee State, 2-0, in Mountain East Conference play at the West Family Athletic Complex.
The Hilltoppers controlled play throughout the afternoon, limiting Shawnee State to zero shots while producing nine shots and six corner kicks of their own. West Liberty scored both of its goals in the first half and held the Bears without a shot for the full 90 minutes.
The Hilltoppers broke through in the 27th minute on a team goal before
Kylie Collins doubled the advantage with her third goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Collins finished with a team-high three shots, including two on goal, as West Liberty carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.
West Liberty continued to pressure the Shawnee State defense after the break, putting together an attacking stretch from 57:36 to 66:07 that produced three shots and two corner kicks.
Frida Lundberg, Ariana Bosh and Collins each recorded a shot during the sequence.
The Hilltoppers' defense took care of the rest, keeping Shawnee State without a shot or shot on goal for the entire match.
Kaisa Vale played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded the shutout without being called upon to make a save. Shawnee State was credited with one save.
West Liberty also weathered several physical stretches throughout the match. The teams combined for seven fouls and one card during a nine-minute stretch early in the match, while the second half featured additional physical play, including a stretch with three fouls and two cards.
The Hilltoppers will return to action Wednesday when they host Glenville State at 7 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex for Ohio Valley Soccer Night.
