WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Megan Lawless, a two-time All-Ohio volleyball standout from Dover (Ohio) High School, has signed to play her collegiate volleyball for head coach Kayla Fetsko at West Liberty University. The newest Hilltopper joins Dover teammate Olivia Kinsey in the 2014 recruiting class. Kinsey signed with WLU during the fall early-signing period.
"Megan's natural volleyball skill set and her on-court IQ makes her an impact player wherever she lines up," Fetsko said. "Megan can play any hitting position and has set in the past but prefers playing as a defensive specialist. With her passing ability and overall athletic skill set, we expect her to compete for playing time right away in the fall."
Lawless played her first three high school seasons at Ohio Division IV Tuscarawas Central Catholic in nearby New Philadelphia, Ohio.
A dominant offensive force, she helped lead the Saints to back-to-back regional championships in her sophomore and junior seasons. Tuscarawas Central made it to the Ohio Division IV state championship game each year before settling for runner-up honors.
Lawless virtually rewrote the TCC record book during her three seasons with the Saints. She set a school record with 17 service aces in a win against New Matamoras Frontier on Oct. 25, 2011, one of the top 10 efforts in Ohio high school history. Her 140 service aces in 2011 are the sixth-highest ever for a Buckeye State prep player while her 124 aces in 2012 are tied for 9th all-time.
The Tusky Central star was voted District 5 Player of the Year and earned first-team All-Ohio Division IV honors following her junior season.
Lawless transferred to Dover High School for her senior year and helped lead the Tornadoes to an unbeaten regular season and Ohio Division II regional title. Dover wrapped up the best season in school history with a 27-1 record after falling to Kettering Alter in the Ohio Division II state semifinals. Lawless had 9 kills and 11 digs in the semifinal setback.
A second-team All-Ohio Division II selection last fall, Lawless joins Kinsey and three other Buckeye State standouts who signed in the fall to complete the 2014 recruiting class. Coach Fetsko's three other early-signees were Alexis Boyd (Heath HS), Erin Jans (Tipp City Tippecanoe HS) and Sydney Scherer (Brookville HS).
