URBANA, Ohio – Host Urbana took over second place in the Mountain East Conference baseball standings on Sunday with its second straight sweep of West Liberty.
The Blue Knights (13-7, 12-4) broke out the heavy artillery against Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (16-15, 14-11) Sunday afternoon, pounding out 25 hits on the day to win by scores of 10-4 and 15-1. The first game started out as a pitcher's duel as West Liberty trailed just 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth only to see Urbana break the game open with an 8-run uprising. The Hilltoppers pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
The Blue Knights scored 10 runs in the first two innings of the second game and never looked back. Four Urbana pitchers held the Hilltopper offense to just two singles but WLU avoided the shutout on a sacrifice fly by Johnson in the fifth.
