ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to Concord Saturday afternoon, falling by scores of 11-0 and 9-5 at Anderson Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (22-21, 19-16) couldn't solve Mountain Lion (31-13, 28-10) pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz in the opener. The Concord ace needed just 84 pitches to author a three-hit shutout, retiring 16 of West Liberty's last 17 batters and stretching his scoreless inning streak to 21.1 innings.
The Black and Gold jumped on the hosts in the second game, plating four runs - all unearned - in the top of the first.
The Mountain Lions responded with a single run in the bottom of the first and took a 5-4 lead with a four-run uprising of their own in the second inning.
The Hilltoppers battled back to tie the game at 5-5 with a run in the fourth but a WLU error opened the door in the bottom of the frame and Concord scored three unearned runs to take the lead for good.
Mike Johnson had a double and single for West Liberty while Josh Nagel chipped in with a two-run single. Jon-Michael Brunner, Scott Castilow and Tim Hughes all singled and drove in a run in a losing cause.
West Liberty will try to rebound on Sunday when the two teams meet again in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Anderson Field.
