Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Regionally-ranked Shepherd strengthened its grasp on the Mountain East Conference lead Friday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from West Liberty at Fairfax Field.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (21-18, 18-13) fell by scores of 8-0 and 13-2. The host Rams (29-8, 27-5) got a strong mound performance from Paul Hvozdovic in the opener as the Shepherd ace blanked the Hilltoppers on just four hits. Scott Castilow had a double and a single to lead West Liberty. In the second game, the Rams got out of a bases-loaded one-out situation with a double play to preserve a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning before exploding for seven runs – all with two out – in the bottom of the frame to break the game open.
The Hilltoppers will try to bounce back on Saturday when they challenge the Rams again in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
