Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from UVA-Wise for the second straight day here at Kovalick Field on Sunday, pulling out a 1-0 eight-inning nailbiter in the opener before hammering out a 15-5 verdict in the finale.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (20-15, 17-10) finally broke the scoring ice in the eighth inning of the opener. Back-to-back one-out singles by Dylan Pounds and Jarred Carranza combined with a throwing error put runners on second and third for the Hilltoppers. D.J. Busby was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Jon-Michael Brunner singled through the right side of the drawn-up infield to chase home the game's only run. Brunner also had the game's only extra-base hit – a sixth-inning double – while Carranza checked in with a pair of singles.
West Liberty exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings of the second game and never looked back, pounding out 17 hits and playing errorless ball in the field to finish off the sweep.
D.J. Busby led the barrage with a double, three singles and a pair of RBIs while Tim Mirandy chased home three runs with a double and two singles. Anthony Pierro collected two RBIs with a double and a single while Mike Johnson weighed in with a two-run double and Taylor Snare had a two-hit day. The Hilltoppers head to South Euclid, Ohio on Thursday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Notre Dame (Ohio).
