Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team came from behind in its final at-bat twice on Saturday to sweep a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from visiting UVA-Wise by scores of 5-4 and 2-1.
In the opener, Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (18-15, 15-10) pulled out a thrilling win by scoring two runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh. Scott Castilow had a double and single and drove in a run while Jarred Carranza added two singles and an RBI. Sean Pare picked up the win with two innings of shutout relief. In the second game, UVA-Wise (9-20, 6-15) starter Jared Finch carried a one-hit shutout into the bottom of the sixth only to see West Liberty erase the 1-0 deficit with another bolt of two-out lightning.
Mirandy and Taylor Snare chased Finch with back-to-back singles, bringing reliever Danny Bates to the hill. Castilow greeted Bates with a game-tying single to center and Anthony Pierro followed with a run-scoring single to left that put the hosts ahead to stay. Greg Stagani, who had come on in relief to get the final out in the sixth, pitched his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the seventh to seal the win. The teams return to Kovalick Field Sunday at 1 p.m. for another doubleheader.
