Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team took over first place in the Mountain East Conference standings Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (13-6, 11-3) never trailed in either game against the struggling Pioneers (2-13, 2-9), taking the first game by a 7-2 count and rolling to an 8-4 win in the finale.
In the opener, West Liberty broke open a close game with a 5-run explosion in the top of the sixth. Tim Mirandy's 2-run double highlighted the uprising, which was also aided by a pair of Glenville errors.
Mark Smyth pitched into the sixth inning to pick up the win with relief help from Tory Fuscardo. D.J. Busby singled and drove in two runs while Jordan Meyer added an RBI single.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their first three at-bats in the second game and never looked back. Mirandy had a pair of singles and drove in a run while Mike Johnson, Tim Hughes and Anthony Pierro also had multi-hit games. Busby collected a single and two more RBIs.
Dylan Grosul hurled the first five innings to get the win with Sean Pare closing up shop in the sixth and seventh.
West Liberty returns to action on Wednesday when the Hilltoppers host Notre Dame (Ohio) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa.
