Box Score CARY, N.C. – The West Liberty University baseball team beat St. Augustine's (N.C.), 6-1, Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Reef got the start and gave up only one single over six scoreless innings while striking out 5 and walking 2 before yielding the hill to Hughes. The WLU reliever picked up where Reef had left off, giving up just a single and an unearned run while striking out 6 St. Augustine's hitters without giving up a walk.
Jose Carranza's RBI double in the fifth broke the scoring ice for West Liberty but the Falcons took advantage of a walk, a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 7th to plate the tying run.
The Hilltopper bats rumbled to life with 3 runs in the top of the 8th on RBI singles by Jordan Meyer and Dylan Pounds along with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Time Hughes. West Liberty then tacked on a pair of insurance tallies in the top of the 9th on RBI base knocks by Meyer and Jon-Michael Brunner.
Meyer, Brunner, Dylan Pounds and Anthony Pierro all had multi-hit games for the Hilltoppers, who raked a trio of Falcon hurlers for a dozen hits on the afternoon.
West Liberty is scheduled to open Mountain East Conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Charleston.
