Box Score
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The No. 18-ranked West Liberty University women exploded for 58 second-half points here Monday night and sprinted off to a 95-77 rout of West Virginia State in Mountain East Conference action at the Walker Convocation Center.
Coach Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (3-1, 2-0) led just 37-36 at the half but hit the ground running in the second half and quickly turned the game into a romp.
Liz Flowers cashed one of her several fast-break baskets for a 56-46 West Liberty lead at the 15-minute mark and the Yellowjackets (2-2, 0-1) never got the margin into single digits again.
Flowers and Hillary Southworth formed a lethal 1-2 scoring punch for the Hilltoppers as Flowers finished with a game-high 26 points and 5 assists while Southworth – the nation's second-leading scorer two seasons ago – tossed in 22 of her season-high 25 points in the second half.
Kailee Howe had another outstanding night quarterbacking the WLU transition game. The junior point guard handed out a Mountain East Conference record 14 assists for the second straight game and added 8 points to just miss a double-double.
Junior post Kiki Simpson had a huge game, dominating the backboards at both ends of the court for an MEC season-high 20 rebounds. Simpson also came up just shy of a double-double with 9 points.
Jenn Mohney added 11 points off the bench while freshman Baylen Dyrlund donated 9 points and 9 rebounds to the cause in just 12 minutes of action.
Montrail Roberts' 18 points led the way for West Virginia State while Shealyn Shafer added 14 points and 10 rebounds in a losing cause.
The Lady Hilltoppers will be idle over the Thanksgiving break but return to action on Dec. 1 when they host Tusculum (Tenn.) in a non-conference tilt at the ASRC. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
