WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The unbeaten West Liberty University women's tennis team kept right on rolling here Wednesday afternoon, breezing to an 8-1 rout of West Virginia Wesleyan in Mountain East Conference action at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Lady Hilltoppers (9-0, 6-0) swept all three doubles matches and took five of the six singles matches to send the Bobcats (3-4, 2-3) home e
mpty-handed.
West Liberty just missed making it a clean sweep as senior standout
Lauren Howard, the reigning MEC Player of the Week, locked horns with Wesleyan standout Paula Pimenta in a classic at No. 1 singles. The two aces split the first two sets to force a tiebreaker with Howard coming up just short in the extra frame by a 10-8 score.
It was all Hilltoppers the rest of the way, however.
Emily Dawson,
Raquel Cabero,
Alex Barr, Kate Pinchuk and
Andrea Puga posted singles wins. Dawson and Barr teamed up for the nod at No. 1 doubles with Howard and Pinchuk winning their No. 2 doubles match. Cabero and
Alaina Pauley coasted to an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Hilltoppers close out the MEC portion of the regular season on Friday when they travel to defending champion West Virginia State (5-1, 5-0) in a meeting of the MEC's only two squads still unbeaten in league play. Doubles action gets under way at 4 p.m. in Institute.
