WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Nationally-ranked Mercyhurst won the first five matches and never looked back Tuesday night in handing the West Liberty University wrestling team a 31-9 setback at the ASRC.
Coach Brian Davis's Hilltoppers (2-2) put up a good fight against the No. 11 Lakers (8-1) but couldn't quite close the deal in several matches.
While Mercyhurst picked up a forfeit at 149 and won seven of the nine matches on the mat, five of the Lakers' seven wins were decided by margins of three points or less or in overtime.
Mike Emery got the Hilltoppers on the board when he pinned Clint Schaefer at 5:10 of their 165-pound match. Danny Doyle rounded out the West Liberty scoring with a 3-1 decision against Brian Beattie at 197.
The Hilltoppers return to action Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Wheeling Jesuit University at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.
