FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team held off a late Winston-Salem State surge on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 3-2 win in the final match of this weekend's FalconFest Invitational at Fairmont State University.
After sweeping the first two games from the Rams, Coach Kayla Fetsko's Hilltoppers (1-3) saw the CIAA squad rally to take the next two games and knot the match. West Liberty had more gas in the tank, however, and rolled to a 15-8 nod in the fifth and final game to earn the win.
Paige Warner paced the Black and Gold with 14 kills while Rachel Zeigler added 13 kills and a pair of blocks. Nicole Sadecky chipped in with 10 kills and two service aces. Miranda Garmenn and Chelsea Byrge each chipped in with double-doubles. Garmenn finished with 20 assists and 10 digs while Byrge added 16 assists and 10 digs. Courtney Pyeritz turned in a team-high 23 digs.
That turned out to be the Hilltoppers' only win of the weekend in the highly-competitive event, which featured teams from the MEC, CIAA and PSAC. West Liberty had dropped a 3-0 decision to Mercyhurst (Pa.) earlier on Saturday after falling to Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown by scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, on Friday.
Despite the disappointing outcome in the win column, several Hilltoppers finished the weekend with impressive numbers.
Zeigler averaged more than 10 kills per match with a total of 41 kills while Sadecky and Warner were charted with 30 and 28, respectively.
Byrge had a team-high 73 assists with support from Garmenn, who was charted with 42. Pyeritz led the way with 73 digs with Sadecky second at 53.
The West Liberty spikers return to action on Friday when they head south for the two-day University of Charleston Invitational.
