PRINCETON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team has qualified for the West Virginia Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the North Division.
The eight-team double-elimination tournament is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley with the winner earning the WVIAC's automatic bid to next month's NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
First-year coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (21-24, 18-15) will open tournament play at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday against Concord (32-18, 26-9), the No. 2 seed in the South Division.
West Liberty is returning to the WVIAC Tournament for only the second time in the past six seasons after more than doubling its win total from a season ago.
Playing in a highly-competitive North Division which featured nationally-ranked Seton Hill and defending WVIAC champion Shepherd, the Hilltoppers cracked the 20-win barrier for the first time in the past six seasons and posted their first winning league record since the 2007 squad claimed the North Division's regular season title.
The winner of the West Liberty-Concord tournament opener returns to action on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's second first-round game between North Division No. 1 seed Seton Hill (37-13, 26-8) and South Division No. 4 Charleston (19-27, 15-19).
The WLU-Concord loser will meet the Seton Hill-Charleston loser at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in an elimination game.
