WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Andrew Henry singled home
Josh Nagel with two out in the bottom of the 11th here Sunday afternoon to give the West Liberty University baseball team a 6-5 walk-off win against Alderson-Broaddus at sun-splashed Kovalick Field.
Sunday's win in the scheduled 9-inning game came at a good time for Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (19-22, 16-13), who strengthened their hold on third place in the West Virginia Conference North Division standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
West Liberty had carried a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning only to see an error open the door for the Battlers (19-20, 14-16) to score three unearned runs with two out, forcing the game into extra innings.
Both teams were charted with four errors on the afternoon – all five of Alderson-Broaddus's runs were unearned – and it was another miscue that opened the door to victory for the hosts.
Nagel led off the bottom of the 11th with a grounder to third that was misplayed by the A-B third baseman. A wild pitch put Nagel in scoring position and he moved to third on
Tim Mirandy's one-out fly ball to center. Henry followed with the game-winning single.
Josh Graham got the win on the mound with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief following a strong start by
Dylan Grosul, who struck out six and walked only two while pitching into the ninth.
West Liberty hosts Charleston on Tuesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kovalick Field.
