ATHENS, W.Va. – Regionally-ranked Concord lived up to its hard-hitting reputation Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a West Virginia Conference doubleheader from West Liberty by scores of 10-1 and 13-3 at Anderson Field.
The third-highest scoring team in the nation and the top hitting team in the WVIAC, the Mountain Lions (25-16, 20-7), pounded out 26 hits and belted 5 home runs to overpower the visiting Hilltoppers (18-20, 15-11).
West Liberty couldn't get anything going at the plate in the opener, managing just three singles against Concord starter Kevin Mack.
Anthony Pierro spoiled Mack's shutout bid with an RBI single in the top of the third.
The Hilltopper bats came to life in the second game, pounding out nine hits and pushing three runs across the plate in the top of the fifth but it proved to be too little, too late against a Mountain Lion squad that ripped out 15 hits, nearly half of which went for extra bases.
The Hilltoppers return to Kovalick Field on Saturday for 1 p.m. doubleheader against Alderson-Broaddus.
