GREENSBURG, Pa. – No. 10 Seton Hill exploded for eight runs in the last two innings here Sunday and pulled away to a 13-5 victory against West Liberty in a scheduled 9-inning baseball game on the Griffins' home diamond.
Seton Hill (30-9, 20-4) then used another late uprising to claim a 10-6 win in a 7-inning game that wrapped up the weekend series between the WVIAC North Division rivals. The 7-inning game will not count in the league standings.
Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (17-17, 15-9) had come from behind to earn a split of Saturday's doubleheader against their nationally-ranked hosts and it appeared that same scenario was playing out in Sunday's opener.
Trailing 5-1 through five innings, West Liberty scored once in the top of the sixth and
Jon-Michael Brunner's two-run homer sparked a three-run rally in the top of the seventh which tied the score at 5-5.
Seton Hill struck back with four two-out runs in the bottom of the frame and added four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Brunner, who had homered twice on Saturday, continued his hot streak. The sophomore outfielder drove in three runs with a single and double to go along with his circuit blast.
Travis Denman added a pair of doubles, D.J. Busby had two singles and
Matt Bradford weighed in with an RBI base knock.
The second game played out in a similar fashion with the Hilltoppers scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to forge a 5-5 tie only to see the Griffins score five times in the bottom of the inning to open up an insurmountable lead.
Anthony Pierro had three hits for West Liberty while
Andrew Henry drove in two runs with a single and a double.
Tim Mirandy belted a solo homer in the sixth and picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The Hilltoppers hit the road again on Wednesday with a long trip south to Concord for a 1 p.m. twinbill.
